Why Ahmedabad is called Manchester of India?

Ahmedabad is the biggest city in Gujarat and the sixth biggest in India. Ahmedabad is situated in the Western part of India on the banks of River Sabarmati. Ahmedabad is also called as Karnavati or Amdavad. Ahmedabad represents the place with cultural diversity. This place shows the visitors many historical sites, ancient temples and mosques that attract the tourists a lot. The famous places of Ahmedabad include Jumma Masjid and Sabarmati Ashram.

Ahmedabad is listed after Mumbai in being called as industrial center. Ahmedabad manufactures Denim in large quantities and exports gems and Jewellery. The major industry in Ahmedabad is textile. In 1861, Ranchhodlal Chhotalal has established the first textile mill. It is also called as Shahpur mill. After this, many textile mills were started like Calico mill and other mills started by Maganbhai, Amabalal Sarabhai, Kasturbhai Lalbhai. After several mills were established it has eventually became the center for commercial and industrial house. The number of textile mills has increased to about 33 by the year 1905. Slowly textile industry became a huge one that flourished well in Ahmedabad. This development in Ahmedabad has given the name to this city as Manchester of India.

In the beginning of 20th century textile industry did not improve much. After First World War and the Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi the industry has improved further. The title as ‘Manchester of India, was given to Ahmedabad by major industrialists Ambalal Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai.

In the year 2008, the GDP was calculated for Ahmedabad as $65 billion. Pharmaceutical industry is also developed in Ahmedabad. The major pharmaceutical companies in India called Zydus Cadila and Torrent pharmaceuticals are situated here. Ahmedabad is also headquarters for an important export company called Adani group. This city also is headquarters for Nirma Company which produces detergents. This city was also ranked fifth in the IT enabled services among the nine top most cities in India. Due to immense industrialization Ahmedabad is called Manchester of India.
