Wondering Why?

Why Do All Muscles Cross A Joint?

Why Do All Muscles Cross A Joint?

Do you know that the human body has over 630 muscles in it and by average of its body mass, 40% of that is composed of muscle? Each of the 630 muscles belong it its respective groups. There you have the skeletal muscles, smooth muscles and the cardiac muscle. All of which have its function and relevance in the body.

The cardiac muscle, which is obviously found in the heart, is responsible for pumping blood all throughout your system. Without it, there would not be life. The smooth muscles, on the other hand, take care of involuntary movements in the body, which include excretion, digestive, breathing and all the other, functions of the various organs of the body. Lastly, there you have the skeletal muscles that are responsible for moving your bones or your entire skeletal system.

In a gist, muscles are important because without them we cannot move. You will ultimately die without muscles because it is through the contracting and relaxing of these parts of the body that we are able to eat, to breathe, to urinate and defecate, to smile or to laugh and all the other things that we do that we do not even notice.

If you wonder why all muscles cross a joint in order for it to move, the answer would be quite simple yet complex. Think about knee bending and stretching your calves. Since muscles have to be stretched or contracted then relaxed in order for it to make our body move, it has to connect from one end of a bone to another by crossing a joint. In simpler and more layman terms, you wouldn’t be able to bend your knee if your thigh muscles did not cross over to your knee joint and attached itself to it.
