Why do bipolar people lie?

Bipolar disorder is considered to be one major psychiatric disorder that greatly affects the function of the brain. People with bipolar disorder have unpredictable shifts in one’s mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Under the category of mood disorders, bipolar disorder, otherwise known as manic-depressive illness, is one serious mental illness that often develops during the late teens to young adult stages. In such mental disorder, the person affected may display varied emotions that can reach the extremes. Although bipolar disorder is associated with severe signs and symptoms, it has been discovered that such disorder cannot be easily recognized. Some people even suffer for years before they are properly diagnosed and treated. The signs and symptoms exhibited by bipolar people are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through from time to time.

One associated behavior in people experiencing bipolar disorder is the habit of lying. Studies have shown that there is an association between lying and having the disorder. It is not an uncommon experience for those living or frequently interacting with patients of bipolar disorder to become aggravated at lies told by the bipolar person. Lying and bipolar disorder seem to go hand in hand for most manic-depressives and this association is grounded in more than one source. Fear is one ingredient to such association. Fear emanated from getting punished is one cause. Another reason is to get attention. In order for people to have interest in a bipolar person, one opts to lie. Loss of control is another due to hallucinations being experienced by the person. There are things that bipolar people hear and see that don’t actually exist and it is common that they verbalize thereby, creating lies and making up stories.
