There are many beliefs on why clouds tend to stick around mountains. Some people think that a cloud on a mountain makes it look more magnificent. The real reason for this ‘natural phenomenon, lies in the importance of mountains in controlling the temperature of the earth. When air currents blow from the sea towards the land, they still carry the water vapor from the sea. When they pass a mountain, they have nowhere else to go but up because the mountain blocks their path. As the air goes up, the temperature falls and the water vapor present in the air reaches the ‘dew point,.

When the air reaches this stage, it condenses and the process of condensation forms clouds. The higher the wind rises the lower the temperature becomes. Mountains are nature’s natural climate control specialists. Different temperatures can be experienced through mountains. The higher you go, the colder it gets and the colder it gets the more moisture it possess. The moisture is enough to create clouds that can be naturally seen on mountain peaks at different times of the day.

If you are able to see clouds forming on a mountain, you can say that the mountain is very high or it is very broad. It is broad enough to block the passage of air and create clouds near its peaks. But the process of condensation doesn’t stop there. As more water droplets are formed, the clouds become heavier which will result to rain and depending on location ‘snow,.

This snow or rain evaporates once again and become clouds once more and will continue the cycle of condensation. This type of cloud is also called an ‘orographic, cloud. So the next time you climb on a mountain, make sure that you are ready to get wet. Because if you’re not lucky, you might experience raindrops falling in your head.
