Why do Plants need water?

Although plants don’t have mouth to drink, they still need water in order to survive. Plants need water for a lot of reasons.

Plants need water in order to dissolve the nutrients that are carried by the roots from the soil. Just like humans, plant also eats but their process is different. They get nutrients from the soil surrounding the root system. This is the reason why we need to water the plants on the roots. The nutrients which are dissolved by the water will be carried up through the stems and leaves and would nourish the entire plants.

Water is also an important factor for the plant’s transpiration. Transpiration is the exchange of water for carbon dioxide. If water is taken by the plants, it will evaporate when exposed to heat. Once the pores are open, the carbon dioxide will then be absorbed by the leaves. If there is no enough water, there will be no exchange of carbon dioxide. CO2 is the air that plants need in order to breath.

Plants will definitely wither if water supply is short because it lacks carbon dioxide for the plants to survive.
Water is one main ingredient in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process of converting sun’s energy to plant’s food. Since water is used to combine with carbon especially when transpiration happens, glucose is then produced which the plants use as food.
Water makes the plant stronger. It fills the plants’ cells to give it strength and support. Without water, the plants will just will because there is no fluid that would help it stand firm.

Just like any living things, plants need fluid in order to live. If animals are composed of 75% water, plants have 90%. Almost its entirety is made up of water. That is how important water is to plants.
