Why do utis cause confusion?

UTIs or Urinary Tract Infections are one medical condition that affects the urinary system among humans. Due to presence of bacteria within the urinary tract, infections can occur at any part of the involved system. For most instances, the commonly associated type of bacteria is named as Escheria coli, which is normally found in the digestive tract of the human body. There are several factors that contribute to the onset of urinary tract infections. One major cause of UTI is sexual intercourse. Studies have proven that seventy five to ninety percent of the onsets of UTIs are caused by sex. Another predisposing factor of UTI is gender. Females have greater risk for acquiring UTI because their tract is evidently shorter compared to men. Other factors may be poor personal hygiene, poor sanitation and anatomical malformations of the urinary tract.

UTI occurs when the natural bacterial flora of bladder wall of the urinary system is damaged and bacteria and other pathogens slowly invade the area. As bacteria travels towards the bladder or the kidneys, changes in the urinary pattern and characteristics can be observed. The associated signs and symptoms are burning sensation upon urination, frequency of urination, fever, flank pain, loss of appetite and even hematuria or blood in urine. However, in diverting the condition towards the elderly, signs and symptoms associated with UTI are different. For most elderly patients or clients, one of the earliest signs of UTI and any other serious health conditions is neurological fall back. UTIs have been observed to primarily cause confusion among the elderly because systems of the body among the elderly cannot be reliable anymore, since changes have already occurred. With the nervous system fully intact, any untoward conditions can be manifested through sudden changes in behavior and mentation.
