Why is breakfast important?

Eating breakfast replenishes the glucose in our body, which will be very low in the morning after a long sleep without food. This will provide energy to brain especially, and make it sharp. Studies have shown that children who have breakfast will do better in school. It is also realized that adults also perform well at work during the day after having breakfast. There is a proverb telling us to ‘take breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar’. This tells us how important it is to eat breakfast.

Eating a nutritious breakfast is necessary for a healthy diet. Studies also show that eating breakfast will make us mentally and physically energetic for the day ahead. Research also tells us that eating in the morning will control blood sugar levels, appetite and energy. If you skip breakfast, you will become tired, lose concentration, and in turn will not be able to perform well at work. This loss of concentration may tempt you to have some heavy snack items which are not nutritious, but rich in fat. This might deteriorate your health.

Generally, people think that by skipping breakfast one can lose weight, which is a wrong idea. We can lose weight only when we can increase our Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR. BMR is the rate of calories burnt, or the amount of energy used by the body when we are resting. If we take breakfast, there will be a kick start in the metabolism, but if we skip it our metabolism will slow down, and our body tends to store more fat.

Eating breakfast gives several health benefits. One can avoid obesity risks, high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes. Eating breakfast regularly will allow us to make healthy food choices for the rest of the day; ones which are low in fat and more nutritious. Skipping breakfast will increase the body’s insulin response, which can increase fat storage and weight gain.
