Why is Dairy important?

Dairy food is important in the diet of an individual. The dairy food includes yoghurt, milk, cheese which consists of calcium, protein, and carbohydrates that are essential for good health. The foods that are created or formed from the dairy are the rich source of calcium in the case of Australian diet. The dairy food is generally recommended to consume 3 serves. Based on the nutritional requirement, growth and age, a serve of dairy comprises of 1 glass of milk, 1 tub of yoghurt and 2 slices of cheese.

According to the Australian dietary guidelines, dairy products must have reduced fats. The reduced fats in the dairy foods are not important for the children below the age of 2 years. This is because the energy needs of the children are very high. Hence, reduced fats should be offered for old children and adolescents. This is done if obesity forms part of the family history.

Dairy plays important role in preventing our body from disease and providing significant nutrients. Calcium and vitamin D are the main nutrients available in dairy. Many people in America do not have sufficient calcium and vitamin D in their diets. Deficiency of these nutrients in the diet might cause some risk for initiating osteoporosis or low mass of the bone. Osteoporosis will lead slowly to weak bones having less mass. This disease makes the bones to break faster. The bones are responsible for movement of the body, for supporting the body and for developing immunity. The diseased bones do not function properly. Hence, it is important to get calcium and vitamin D through diet on daily basis.

The diet that consisted of low fats in the 2-3 servings of dairy foods was found to reduce blood pressure significantly. This low fat diet was found to be influencing African-Americans, lowering their blood pressure. The African-American women who had high calcium content in their diets were having low body mass index than those having diet with low calcium content. The increase in calcium content in the body of African-American males reduced their body fats.
