Why Is Earth Called The Blue Planet?

No single explanation can give justice to the name which is given to the earth. Maybe the reason is almost similar when answering the question of the cause why the sky looks blue. The colors of the ocean can be pointed out, as well as the color of the skies. Scientifically, one can say that it all has something to do with light. The ocean mirrors the colors of the sky, this is why, to some extent, you may say that when the weather is gloomy, the sea looks darker like grey.

The Earth is called The Blue Planet essentially because almost 90 percent of its surface is water, and this is the home of 90 percent of the living creatures originate and still exists here. The name can also be attributed to the color of the atmosphere as it can be seen as blue when the sun is bright. From space, the Earth’s color is electric blue. The plentiful oceans and the rich coral reefs all add to this color.

When you are in space, you will see the Earth like a blue marble. It was also established that this color is credited to the sea color. So, we ask then, why is the sea blue? The answer lies mainly on the physics of light. It has always something to do with the water and the light. Among all the other colors, blue is reflected when sunlight hits sea water. The others, like red and green are absorbed. That is why all we can see is blue. This phenomenon is called the Rayleigh scattering effect.

Most of the Earth’s surface is covered with ocean water. And because it reflects the sky’s shades, when one is aboard a space shuttle, the earth is like a blue spot.
