Why is Folate important?

Folate is the natural source for vitamin B9. It is available in various types of foods like green leafy vegetables, peas, and dried beans. When folate is eaten as an ingredient in food, bread, grain or cereal or as a supplement, then it is called as folic acid. Folic acid is a vitamin that is taken by the women who are pregnant or going to become pregnant or during nursing.

Folate helps in production of cells by rapid division. The vitamin helps in preparing both DNA and RNA. Anemia can be reduced by folic acid and this vitamin is known to help in cancer stimulation. Folic acid is mostly used in the case of women going to become pregnant. The folic acid is found to be reducing the birth defects known as neural tube defects. Women who are getting themselves ready for becoming pregnant has to take folic acid few months before they are conceived. They have to continue taking them while they are pregnant as well as during nursing stage.

All the vitamins are supplemented in milligram dosage while folate is taken in microgram dosage. The daily quantity that is recommended for adults is 400 micrograms or 0.4 milligrams. The pregnant women and women who are nursing their children have to take 500 micrograms of folic acid. The pregnant women will have to take the folic acid after it is prescribed by a doctor for them.

Though folic acid is useful to the human body, it is also harmful when taken in excess. High quantities of folic acid can prevent the symptoms appearing due to the lack of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 will lead to anemia. Deficiency in vitamin B12 and the symptoms resulting from that can be covered by the intake of folic acid. The supplementation of B12 along with folic acid will prevent the permanent nerve damage.
