Lyrica is the brand name for the generic drug Pregabalin. Pregabalin is categorized as a drug treatment for convulsions, partial seizures and general seizures. As further studies were conducted, Pregabalin was also found to be effective in treating generalized anxiety disorder. Also, this drug was also approved last June 2007, to be a choice for treating fibromyalgia. Invented by a medicinal chemist named Richard Bruce Silverman of Northwestern University located in the United States, Pregabalin has associated adverse and side effects when used inappropriately. Some identified common side effects are dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy, dry mouth and weight gain. The adverse effects, on the other hand, were known to be tremors, unexplained muscle pain, anxiety, arrythmias and visual disturbances.
After definite intrinsic studies were done for the regulation of the branded name of Pregabalin, Lyrica, it was found out that Lyrica drug has a great possibility of potentiating an abuse. Experiments were done and the results showed that the people who have taken the drug claimed to have a feel good effect. The participants claimed that they were feeling high after a significant dose of Lyrica was given to them. Although experts cannot decipher the mechanism behind Lyrica causing the drug takers to feel high”, it is claimed to have similar effects as that with anti-anxiety drug labeled as Valium. Because it was deemed to be addictive and is having a high potential for abuse, Lyrica is considered to be a controlled substance. One significant sign of Lyrica abuse is the body not able to function maximally when the drug is not taken.
At an instant that the body only functions when intake of Lyrica drug has been done, then it should be taken as a serious problem and medical attention should rightfully be sought.
