Why is Mecca important?

Mecca is a holy city found in the country of Saudi Arabia. It is regarded by Muslim believers to be the holiest place in the Islamic religion. The original name of the city was Makkah al-Mukarramah which literally means Mecca the Honored. Before the city of Mecca became the holy place for Muslims, it was once the most important trading center. This was on the 7th century. Attributed to Abraham’s first born descendants, Mecca was first led by local sharifs. After the Ottoman Empire collapsed, a new kingdom was established where the city of Mecca belonged. This kingdom, called the Hashemite Kingdom of Hejaz, was then grasped by Saudi Arabia in 1925. Then on, Mecca began its extreme expansion in population, infrastructure and culture. Although historical sites and buildings were destroyed because of the country’s political and unjust views of giving reverence to such places, Mecca continues to receive praise and worship among many Islam believers from all over the world.
Mecca is one historical place that is of great essence to the people of Islam. As a sacred place, each and every Muslim has a lifetime mission of going on a journey to Mecca to fulfill one significant pilgrimage. This pilgrimage is known to Muslims as Hajj, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This place is deemed to be holy primarily because it was in Mecca that the great Muhammad, the Islam prophet, was born. In addition to that, Mecca was believed to be the place where a structure built by Abraham is located. This structure is called the Kaa’ba. Aside from that, Mecca is the only place where Muslims have the liberty to profess their faith.
Until today, it is strictly observed that only Muslims are allowed to enter the city.
