Why is Mitosis a form of asexual reproduction?
Reproduction is one process of life that involves the creation of new offspring, primarily from their respective parents. As a fundamental feature among all life forms, reproduction is one significant process that maintains the existence of life and prevents its extinction. There are two types of reproduction that is said to exist, which is asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction occurs only when two individuals or gametes come in union, which basically comes from each opposite type of sex. The most apt living being that utilizes the process of sexual reproduction are the human beings, although most animals and some plants undergo this process as well. Asexual reproduction, on the other hand, is the interesting process of producing an offspring which does not require the presence of two sexually opposite individuals. There are various ways for asexual reproduction to occur, depending on the nature of the organism. Binary fission among bacteria, budding of hydras and yeasts and conjugation are just few of the numerous forms of reproducing asexually.
Mitosis is another method of reproduction that is being categorized to be asexual. Mitosis is the process of equally separating chromosomes contained in a single cell nucleus to produce two sets of identical nuclei. The process of mitosis occurs when the mother cell transmits its genome into two daughter cells, in which a certain specific cycle is undergone for complete mitotic activity to be successful. Mitosis is one form of asexual reproduction because it does need two sexually opposite genomes to produce an offspring. Mitosis can naturally occur as the need arises, thereby possessing the properties defined under asexual reproduction.
With the definition of asexual reproduction being clearly laid out, mitosis is process involving asexual reproduction because it can independently produced its offspring.
