Why is Olduvai Gorge important?

Olduvai Gorge is an archeological site in Africa. It is located in the Great Rift Valley of Tanzania. It is a ravine with two branches. When the branches are connected, it reaches 30 miles long. It has depth of 295 ft that deposits rich fauna fossils, hominid remains that exist 2.1 million to 15,ooo years ago.

The site was excavated by Louis and Mary Leakey in 1950s and had exposed ancient treasures that are valuable to the study of archeology, anthropology, and world history. There were a lot of things discovered in the site.

Olduwan, one of the oldest stone-age tools was also found there. By studying the place, scientists have found out that stone working occurred during those prehistoric years with the stone-hut structure as the evidence

The excavations in Olduvai had proven that there were at least three ancestors of humans that existed in that area. Fossil hominids with scientific names Australopithecus boisei, Homo erectus, and Homo habilis that were identified from Olduvai Gorge were believed to be the first existing human beings in Africa.

Olduvai Gorge is important because tit gives a lot of proofs of what happened in the past. History became clearer because of the items found. Historians and scientists were given substantial information regarding the stone age. By unearthing the place, the civilization of the past is well-understood by the modern generation.

Olduvai Gorge is now a tourist attraction that houses objects about Gorge’s history. It is one of the most important sites because of the prehistoric stories it recorded. It became an instrument in developing more theories about human civilization. It further created more concepts that are essential is completing the puzzles of world history.

With the excavation of Olduvai Gorge, a much clearer picture of African origin was established and a richer world history was made.
