Why is Sojouner Truth famous?

Women had been oppressed centuries ago but with the empowerment of women’s rights, a lot of strong and principled ladies created a significant mark in our history. One of these ladies is Soujouner Truth or Isabella Baumfree in real life.

Truth was an African-America descent. She was famous for being an excellent orator and speaker. Although she doesn’t know how to write or read, she can clearly express her sentiments especially that she was once a victim of slavery and oppression.

Sojouner Truth was born in 1797 in New York. She became popular because of her strong personality and inspiring narratives. She began her life as a slave and had suffered much. She was sold to different people several times and this was the reason why she advocated her ant-slavery campaign. When she received her freedom from slavery, she traveled to a lot of places and preached about her life, inspiring others that freedom can be achieved. She became a religious commune and joined various religious movements. Although a woman, she was not afraid to speak of her rights thus motivating other women to all stood up to what is moral and appropriate.

Truth was also famous because of her speech entitled ‘Ain’t I A Woman’ that talks about the wrong notion that men must always be superior than women. It was actually in 1843 that Isabella Baumfree changed her name to Sojouner Truth as part of her advocacy and her religious beliefs and principle. She wanted to tell the real world on the truth about the rights of blacks and women.

In 1850, her The Narrative of Soujouner Truth was published which also made her well-known to the public. Because of her strong convictions, she was invited to various conferences to talk about women’s rights.
Truth died in 1883 but her legacy on women’s rights always remained as significant and valuable.
