Why should Bioethicists study sociology?

Bioethics came from the word bios which means life and ethos which means behavior. This term was coined because medical experts, scientists and biologists realized that living things connected in interrelationships should have ethics to follow.

Bioethics is defined as the study of ethics brought about by controversial issues and advances in medicine and biology. The term existed because of the modern practices that affect beliefs and norms in bio diversity processes.

On the other hand, bioethicists are individuals who are in charge of examining moral issues that affect life especially in the field of medicine and science. They can be educators, consultants, or policy makers. They play a crucial role in the decision making of a sensitive issue governing life’s processes.

With the important function they portray, bioethicists should study sociology because they are dealing with the behavior of living things. Sociology is the study of how society interacts and that includes human social activity, social classes and stratification and even expanded to health and social development.

Bioethicists should study sociologist so that they will have an understanding of how society works as a whole and how each living thing in the society connects with each other. Sociology would open their awareness that each living thing has a role to play and that would affect the behavior and ethics.

Bioethicist should understand the value of the population. Once they recognize how the society behaves, they will be properly guided in making decisions with regard to ethical issues. Since bioethicists are actively involved in the society as educators and consultants, they should have the capacity to form body of knowledge which would be helpful in the development of the population.

Sociology is an important course bioethicists should take because this will help them broaden their appreciation of live and behavior of the society.
