Why should schools have uniforms?

School uniforms are a set of standardized clothes that are intended to be worn at academic institutions. Schools in different countries of the world have varied perceptions on the wearing of school uniforms. Some countries highly observe and implement the policy on proper uniform wear while others don’t care less on the implications of wearing school uniforms. Although many people complain that school uniforms are additional expenses, most people find it reasonable that schools should implement wearing of uniforms.

Wearing of school uniforms started during the 19th and early 20th centuries. And over the past decades, it has evolved as the times get modern and highly technological. One great incentive of wearing uniforms at school is that the status quo is dominantly the same. The practice of equality is achieved thus, eliminating the concepts of inferiority, delinquency and inappropriate fashion statements. Aside from that, most schools prefer its students to wear uniforms for the primary reason that it instills discipline. In this manner, students learn how to follow simple rules. And eventually, students can also learn to apply this kind of discipline to other things and not just on wearing the school uniform itself. Moreover, the reason for schools to have their students wear uniforms is that it teaches the value of individuality and self-expression without depending on the clothes being worn or the things being owned. School uniforms have an essential function of teaching students that every individual has the right to learn and be taught regardless of one’s status in life.

Although it is still evident that some schools, especially the public ones in the U.S., don’t require the wearing of uniforms, many are still in favor of the thought that schools should have uniforms because of it supports mutual growth among individuals.
