Why was Ugly Betty cancelled?

Ugly Betty was once a top-rating ABC show featuring America Ferrera as Betty. Being a dramedy series made it a hit for almost 4 months. The story is about a style-challenged woman who is not that beautiful but then very smart and talented employee of New York fashion magazine. Ugly Betty is not just about fashion. The show became an inspiration to young women not to become vain but instead, work on their character and personality because in the end, beauty is measured from the heart.

When the show began in 2006, it was a great success. However, ratings began to drop last year which made the show struggle. During its 1st to 3rd series, the show has an average 8.1m viewers but it dropped to 5.3m on the fourth series. This made the Executive Producer Silvio Horta and ABC President Steve McPherson decide to cancel the show.

Ugly Betty was based on a Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea which means I am Betty, the Ugly One. America Ferrera who was chosen to play as Betty became an overnight sensation which led her to win Best Comedy Actress for Golden Globe and Emmys.

The announcement for the cancellation of the show was made earlier in January 2010 to give everybody especially the fans enough time to prepare for the concluding episode. Though it was a hard decision to make, the people behind the show had to accept the reality that all good things shall come to an end.

The 85th and the last episode of Ugly Betty was aired on April 14, 2010 on ABC at 10 pm.

Ugly Betty garnered 19 nominations for Emmy Awards in 2007 and in 2009, it was nominated for Outstanding Costumes and Best Supporting Actress for Vanessa Williams. With the show’s termination, lead actress, America Ferrera now has enough time concentrating on her movie career.

  1. It’s sad to say at the time cable didn’t have Dvr and I remember my BFF telling me about how good Ugly Betty was, but I’m always too busy to watch tv or even remember when the show came on. Like I love Law and Order SVU but do I catch the new episodes, no! And guess what, I don’t have cable now. I’m too busy to keep focus on a television screen.
But I will say this now that Netflix has the series of Ugly Betty all I do in my spare time is watch it. I’m in school to be an fashion editor. And thanks to the show all I do is get more inspired to follow my dreams. On the episode, “Jump,” Betty said “jump and don’t be afraid to fall flat on your face.” Well because of that, me as a single mother will make my big move to New York to get my job after school and I not afraid anymore. Plus my son is my biggest supporter. I WANT UGLY BETTY BACK!

  2. Ugly Betty was cancelled because we all expected them to ditch Daniel Eric Gold (character Matt) by the season 3 finale.
He was extremely unpleasant to view in regards to both his script character, as well as his overall acting skills.

I still can’t get over how they let the show fall to garbage because of one person. That’s usually all it takes.
