Why Are Gypsies Hated?

Unfortunately, people have a very tribal sense of themselves and people like themselves: there is ‘us, and ‘them,. Not only is it very difficult to escape while even talking about people, but it is even harder to escape when coming to conclusions about various groups of people. The main thing to realize is that not everyone hates gypsies, but there are great majorities of people who do. In fact, there are groups that hate other groups, for every single classification out there ‘š it is an impossible fact to avoid, because if there weren’t someone who hated a specific group, that group would not be so defined. It is a complicated issue and a very deep looking into social dynamics.

Hatred of gypsies, however, runs much deeper than almost any other group. They have been for centuries, and remain to this day, one of the most prosecuted and discriminated groups ever (and still they persist ‘š it is a quite amazing story should you choose to look deeper). The reason behind all this is simple; they are different, and choose to live a different way than the majority of humans. They can be described as nomads, but generally, they have just extricated themselves from society ‘š and not just any society, but all society. If you think of a gypsy as someone who simply rejects the culture they were born into but has accepted no other culture, you would have a very close definition. It sounds terrible the way I have phrased it, but it is a choice they have made, and a very valid one.

The reason they are so different, as stated before, is because they are different, and have always been ‘š thus they fit perfectly into a ‘them, tribal definition ‘š and not just from one culture’s perspective. Because gypsies come from all over the world, and exist basically everywhere, they are a group that extends beyond country borders and it is easier to hate such a large group if others, especially others from much different backgrounds, hate them as well. It is more accepted to hate gypsies, and so more people do it. And this has been going on since civilization first began.

I wonder why they are hated in so many different countries and cultures ALL around Europe and the rest of the world… Perhaps there is a reason, don’t you think?
I have known gypsies all my life, I went to school and High School with them and, like kids, I had the same arguments with some of them as I had with any other kid. The difference was that with any other kid the problem never transcended but with gypsies I had next day the mom of that kid threatening me (6 years old) to cut me into pieces with a knife and throwing me to their dogs or calling the older brother of the girl to beat me up. Nice, huh? Also I can’t tell you that it is impossible for me to count how many of my friends have been mugged by gypsies carrying a knife or stopped to be “nicely” asked for money. Have you ever seen any person entering in a fruit store demanding a banana? and threatening the fruit seller with damages in his shop if he didn’t give him that piece of fruit? I did and it was a gypsie.

Gypsies have their own laws and they do not respect others properties or lifes. Most of them are illiterate because they allow children to skip classes or even encourage them to do that. Most of them do not work and just get money from the government (many of them have back problems, leg injures…), from begging or illegal activities such as drugs, smuggling or thievering. I am quite tired of them being looked as funny people which only fault is being excentric and nomadic. Try to live in a neighborhood where they are and you won’t find them funny anymore. Of course, not all of them are like that but let’s say that the percentage that are like that is too high and that it is not nice to be a victim.

i agree with u……… no one has the right to point out others…… i don’t think being a gypsy is bad…it’s like having another religion …and according to my state’s law every individual has the right to follow their own religion ……. n it’s also not about of wat u r …it’s about how your minds are how u think ….once i have seen a gypsy family they were like the nicest person i have ever met…….. and i don’t know wat is the problem with the people out there ..i mean u can’t judge a book by it’s cover..!!!!!

I still don’t understand why there is so much hatred towards them, so what if there are some who do bad things, there are people who do bad things in any culture, religion, ethnicity it doesn’t matter. its just as bad as hating black people or gay people or any people just because of their beliefs. I personally think hating them is unnecessary.

I am an Irish Traveller and not once has i had members of my family fighting country people or mugging them and that. I find it annoying that all of yous think we’re rough, dirty people when we’re just brought up different to yous lot. Yeah we’s might drop out of school early and the boys e’ll probably playfight more than a country boy but not never has we mugged or left crap lying about. I just thinks we’re not understood properly.

I agree with Carolina, there are bad people in every racial, ethnic, religious group. Just because some of them are criminals doesn’t mean we should discriminate. If the world worked like that, we’d all be hatefull people who never communicated with those who are different from us. So what if some are bad? Let’s not judge people on face value. Stereotypes and generalisations are just two of the things keeping us from getting to know each other better and discovering new things.

I’m a black 15 year old South African and those of you who know about our history will know about Apartheid. 18 years into our democracy and racial tensions still run deep between some people. I know its easier said than done but I really think we should stive to see the good in others. “Love your neighbour as you love yourself” and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” are two scriptures we should make an effort to live by.

Gypsies are like black americans. They are hated because of the way the majority of them behave and because they pose a threat to other people’s lives.

I am a 20 yrs old male. I lived in london for about 10 yrs now.

Have you ever wondered why these gipsy people steal? In countries such as Slovakia and Hungary, the white people just hate gipsies. It does not matter what qualifications you gained or experience there is no way you will get a job if your skin colour is a little darker. My uncle got 2 degrees but could not get a job.

When i was in school back in Slovakia, i failed many classes because the teacher was picking on me. No matter how hard I studies, no result. Now I am in a top university in London? How is this possible?

No matter how clean gipsies are, they are always perceived dirty. I have been to white people’s homes and it is just awful.

I admit I don’t like the way white people treat other races but I am not going to hate them because I know that some of them are really nice.

The majority of black people are very dangerous just as gipsies but I’m not going to hate them as I have many nice black friends.

Am I going to have asians because what one man did in New York in 2001?

I am very lucky that I am not very dark so I can say that I’m white. There are good gipsies as well as bad gipsies. We will give you our heart on a gold plate if we like you.

Why do these people move to other people’s countries and then demand every bow to their customs? Europe for Europeans, Romani in Romania! Mexicans in Mexico!
