Why are Hawaiians Fat?

One of the most beautiful places in the world to visit or even to live in is Hawaii. The islands of Hawaii are majestic and there is always something fun to do. Life just seems so much more simple in Hawaii than in other states across the country and the people who were born and raised there really never seem to be taking life for granted in any way. One of the things that visitors of Hawaii seem to notice about the locals of the island is the fact that a lot of the people seem to be a little bit on the fat side of things. There is actually a pretty simple reason behind this.

When someone is born and raised in the traditional light in Hawaii, they soon realize that the families over there are always going to be big eaters. It is definitely a cultural thing for them and they have a knack for growing and hunting down their own food and making the biggest and best meals that you have ever seen before in your life. There is no worry over there about eating too much or watching your weight. To be big is to be healthy and well off financially. Kind of like royalty.

So, while it might seem like locals of Hawaii are out of shape and a little bit overweight, it is actually a compliment to them and not a slander on how they look or anything like that. I actually really do wish that more and more people would take up this way of looking at things because it seems like we are all way too wrapped up in appearance and image issues these days. The people of Hawaii are doing it the right way and we could all use a little bit of self assurance in our lives.

It surely isn’t healthy to be fat, obesity is a huge problem in Hawaii. I exercise alot and eat alot of fruits, vegetables and meat. Why? Cause it makes me more energetic during the day, without the use of coffee or energetic drinks. Saying we all should be fat either comes from a self-concious obese person or a person who isn’t well educated when it comes to living a life as nature intended us to live.

This article is extremely misleading. It is not healthy to be fat, and ancient Hawaiians were not fat. Lots of overweight Hawaiians die at an early age because of their obesity. This article is a disservice and perpetuates the obesity crisis.

Agreed. Personally, I think of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (sung Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World mix) and his brother… Both died at age 38 due to obesity related health problems. I understand that being overweight used to be a sign of being rich; more food means more money, right? Back when food was scarcer, that was true. Today, however, that is not the case. It’s not all going to change at once, but I believe that better education would start a general trend towards people with a healthier weight.

Our diet is making them fat? You oviously have not been exposed to enough culture. North Americans are only fat because they dont get as much activity as other cultures. With the easiest access to the largest varities of food anywhere on the planet, we should have an ideal diet. Other cultures value the act of eating and preparing much more than North Americans. Extra preparation equals extra appreciation.
