Why do ceiling fans make noise?

Ceiling fans are a blessing in hot areas. With climate change pushing temperatures in to extremes, people all over the world are looking at different ways of keeping cool or keeping warm. Ceiling fans can definitely help with the latter. But a ceiling fan doesn’t simply provide a cooling breeze at all times – there are other benefits, too. It is much cheaper to run a ceiling fan than air conditioning and in addition, if used along with other cooling methods, it can reduce energy wastage and improve air circulation.

But the noise a ceiling fan makes can be very annoying to some people. Ceiling fans make different kinds of noises and there can be very different reasons behind the noises. The basic whooshing noise of the air over the blades is the most common complaint. This is caused by turbulence in air flow over blades, particularly if they are uneven. Sometimes, cleaning a blade with a soft cloth and water (or grease busters) to remove accumulated dirt can solve the problem easily.

If there is a low pitched humming noise coming from the fan, it can be an electrical hum from a faulty receiver or the result of using wall light dimmers. Another reason for a humming noise can be due to a mechanical hum from parts in the motor rubbing together very fast. On the other hand, a grinding noise can be a result of failed ball bearings which need replacement.

Rattling, clicking or ticking noises can all be a result of loose fan blades or other parts. If the sound persists, make sure all the fan blades and internal parts are screwed in tight. If this is not done properly, not only will the noise persist but wear and tear on your fan may increase.
At the end of the day a fan is a blessing to have, but it needs care and repairs to lengthen its life and keep it working properly.
