Why Do Indians Smell?

Why Do Indians Smell?

Some would say that this is a prejudice and even racial question. The truth is that everyone and anyone can smell bad depending on the food that they eat or their very own lifestyles. Proper hygiene is also a key factor in determining someone’s ‘body smell,. People believe in the myth that Indians smell bad. If someone happens to pass by an Indian that smells bad, they would initially think that the rumors are true.

Does this mean that only Indians smell? No, if their country prohibits their people from taking a baths then that is another matter (which is of course is impossible). Another probable reason is due to the different type of sweat glands people have. Some people on other countries have more active sweat glands due to their climate. Indians says that this question is baseless and the fact that everyone has their own smell should not discriminate other people without smelling themselves.

Food is one example of factors that affect the odor of a human body. Some foods can have different effects (especially on the sweat glands) that can cause a bad smell. The same can be said about bad breath. When people don’t brush their teeth, their breath smells awful. Their lifestyles also affect their scents. Most people that live in poverty don’t care much about what they look or what they smell. Unlike those that live well and are able to eat good food everyday, you will definitely smell and see the difference between different lifestyles.

Indians love to cook curry and other spicy foods. Some cultures don’t appreciate the smell and would initially think that Indians stink because they eat stinky foods. People are natural born critics and what they don’t understand they will always criticize. The same can be said about different religions around the world. Just because it is not what you believe in, doesn’t mean your religion is right. Smell yourself first, before you criticize the smell of others.

One of the reasons that Indians – mainly southern Indians – smell so bad to non-Indians is due to the way they use Fenugreek. This plant, when prepared in certain ways, causes the sweat, urine etc. to secrete smell that smells to non-Indians like feces.
If you eat a lot of it – you can not smell it at all on yourself….
If you are a westerner that occasionally eat it, it will not have the same impact.
It is true that immediately after bathing the smell goes away – because it washes away the sweat, however Indians have active sweat glands, so the sweat comes back immediately, and sweat does stick to the cloths that you wear.

The plant is used in multiple cultures, however South Indians are using it in very high amounts.

It is known as methi in Hindi, Urdu, and Nepali, as methii (মেথী) in Bengali, as menthiyam, and venthayam (வெந்தயம்) in Tamil, Helba (حلبه) in Arabic, menthya (ಮೆಂತ್ಯ) in Kannada, uluwa (ഉലുവ) in malayalam, and menthulu in Telugu.

So: Indians – can you PLEASE stop eating so much of it?

I am a South Indian and I hardly ever use that spice (read maybe twice a year)specified by the “learned” Jay who is clearly a South Indian- hating North Indian pretending to be Non Indian. A very inaccurate claim that South Indians consume fenugreek spice a lot. Another claim of the “experienced” Jay is that Indians sweat a lot which is just baseless. Some Indians may smell while others don’t. The smell can be due to the use of spices in general and of course onions and garlic in particular which is also used by people of other countries. There is no particular spice which is causing the BO as pointed out.

I’ve had Indian girlfriends. I’ve met many others in the families and other social gatherings. I love the food.

I’ve run into odiferous one’s from time to time. As well as other stinky peoples in many racial & socio-economic backgrounds too.

But yesterday was a cake topper!!! Holy F-WORD!
    .
The dude, on the Delta Flight to Atlanta, smelled like a moldy rug soaked in month old cat piss.

For crying out loud! Shower (all) People! At least daily!

I overheard this guy say he was in sales.

I can only imagine his potential clients making excuses to flee, or dodge, his presence with any feeble idea they could conjure.

And I bet he doesn’t have a clue about why he can never arrange a second meeting or even get a call back.

This article is true based on my experience working with Indians. Majority smells bad perhaps due to their lifestyle, practices, lack of education in hygiene, and non acceptance of truth. Perhaps what I can suggest to Indian officials is to intensify their campaign on educating proper hygiene and ethics among their people. This will avoid further criticism as we all work for quite sometime in a multinational and multi-racial company. This is not being racist, to tell somebody the truth what people observe. Take it as a positive way of improving oneself and refrain being too sensitive on criticism. Bullying is another way they widely practice, it’s like provoking a fight on the manner they speak and act. Peace!

        Hey Mike,

My name is ASIN – Indian Actress. Many say I have body odor. But really, who cares??? Our great ancestors, the Apes, never used soaps and deodorants!!! What really matters is how you look – we dress very good (at least in 1 billion set of eyes). It does not matter how we smell just as long as we look good.

Soaps and deodorants are killers of nature. We need to respect all forms of life, including bacteria.

Its all in the mind – we practice it all the time to survive. We deny the very existence of body stink; or we would say that you are really human or sexy if you smell. In contrast, we think that is it not wise to spend of soaps and deodorants – we rather buy some golden accesories and pawn it later.

You see, about a billion people have the same good and pleasing and sexy smell, which you brand it as body order. My reply – thank you for confirming that we are wise enough to avoid soaps and deodorants, and are experts in positive thinking. Stinking Body Order is good, after all.

Other Bollywood actors who criticize me body other, are not totally Indians – they are Westerners in the appearance of an Indian. To you I say, I love my sweaty and good smelling underarm – and you know, a billion other Indians love me because I smell like them.

First of all, what is Bollywood? I’ve never heard of it. If your country is going to dominate ours, then why isn’t Bollywood on our TV’s?? If you like to smell bad that is your right as a human. Personally, I am considerate of others and do not want to smell bad around others. I can’t imagine having sexual relations with someone who doesn’t use soap! Nasty!

You could be THE HOTTEST guy or chick in the world, but if I’m walking up to you and from 4-5 feet away I can smell how BADLY you STINK – That is a complete deal breaker! Who wants to be near someone who smell like ASS all the time? Who the hell would want to have sex with that?? Even hookers cringe and hate their lives when you guys show up at their door!
I am NOT RACIST! NOT ALL INDIANS SMELL!! But the ones THAT DO, ALL SMELL LIKE THEY JUST CAME OUT OF THE SAME STINKY SWAMPY BUTT HOLE!
TAKE A FRIGGIN SHOWER AND SCRUB YOURSELF WITH LOTS OF SOAP!!! (DONT FORGET TO WASH YOUR GREASY ASS HAIR!!) THEN APPLY A NICE THICK COAT OF DEODORANT!! FINALLY – PUT A NICE SPRAY OR TWO (NOT FIFTY!!) OF PERFUME OR COLOGNE!
PLEASE! For the sake of the people that get stuck next to you on the bus.. For the sake of the person that has to stand beside you in a line… For the sake of the poor hooker that you have to pay to have sex with your smelly ass, TAKE A FRIGGIN SHOWER!!!!!!!

I hope you really don’t believe that. Being clean is a very high priority. You can be the most beautiful woman in the world, but if you smell bad, that means absolutely nothing. If I can smell body odor, then that means ‘other’ parts are even worse. Thanks but no thanks. It’s offensive to tell you the truth. Usually, having a bad smell indicates that something is wrong. I hate to be gross but, if a woman goes to the gynecologist, and there is a foul odor down below, 9 times out of ten, something is wrong. Culture or not, you need to bathe daily and wear deodorant.

The political correctness in the article just made me roll my eyes. Hand wringing and worry about offense is not compatible with gaining knowledge.

In my experience, the smell is a combination of factors, most of which the author mentioned.

    -Less bathing
    -Perfumes that westerners find offensive
-Diet of highly aromatic and spicy food

Unlike the author, I do criticize the smell and take offense to it. Indians are welcome to smell any way they wish in their own culture. When they live among us in the west, they need to adapt to our standards of hygiene. The ones that don’t deserve to be criticized.

    1) First of all, NOT EVERY INDIAN SMELLS!

    2)Few do, but why?
Ans: Yes, I have seen a guy. Because most of the American Homes don’t have proper ventillation. The food that they cook which has lot of spices gets onto their clothes and it turns out hard to get rid of it.

    3) Conclusion: DONT BE RACIST!!
Don’t call it on a group or sect of people. Indians don’t call AMERICANS AS HOMELESS AND DRUG-ADDICTS by seeing homeless and drug-addicts on every other street, but they feel them as unfortunate and stupid INDIVIDUALS!.C’mon people change your mindset!! 🙂 and be nice to human kind.

I am Caucasian, and I have noticed there is a certain group of white people who carry the same odd smell of burning ketones-I know from biology class. I have never smelled anyone of another ethnicity who carries this powerful acrid smell. But there is no pattern to who has it, it doesn’t even run in families as far as I can tell. It’s about the persons individual body chemistry. Some people just stink. Some people smell really good and sexy when they sweat. I feel that a more natural smell is sexier as long as the person is clean. Standards for cleanliness are different in different classes, ethnicities, and parts of the world. It’s also a persons personal olfactory genetics that determine how things smell. An interesting example is the smell of asparagus in urine. Everyone has this chemical in their urine after eating asparagus but only certain people can smell it! This has been studied and it has been found that the people who CAN smell it have an adaptive gene that allows them to smell it. Things don’t smell exactly the same to everyone. That’s why some people love garlic, and others can’t stand it. Body Scents are unique and the sense of smell is unique to each person beyond some fundamentals. Just like taste, it also depends on exposure.
When you are used to a scent it is easier to appreciate or tolerate. It’s backwards to speak of “races” of people. We may speak of ethnicities, with minor differences. But there is only one race: Human.

First I have lived with indians and when it comes to bathing they bath more than three times aday! So they are very clean people atleast the ones I lived with.
The problem is not in the food eating the problem is in the food cooking. I wish I can explain this in details but mainly frying the spices in the oil as opposed to putting the spices after te food is cooked. The smell if it is a closed area would literally stick to the furniture clothes hair everything!
My man is Pakistani and before we were getting married everyone from my side kept warning me that if he doesn’t smell then all his family will. Which I honestly found very very offensive. He doesn’t smell his family doesn’t smell either!
At last I think some nations have a specific smell like Chinese fo in stance to me they all smell like some kind of fish or plastic I can’t yet decide. But yes even saying this is too offensive and afterall i might be smelling more than anyone ….that’s eveythingfor now

what is it with some people like the writer of this thread, that they cant say the truth. they have been programmed by leftist training to not say anything offensive to another race for fear of being racist or bla, bla. they have become sought of programmed robots in a way conforming exactly to a policy ,this is absurd, and prevents correct estimation and analysis of different races and cultures in a host of different areas.
I reject that attempt at programming and suppression of honest analysis which has been implemented mainly by leftist government, councils and socialists and in there education programs at schools.
A person should have the right to say the truth about other races without being suppressed .
Indians do stink, they should wear deodarant

India will dominate the world. So guys, I guess you will have to simply accept the fact that our smell will eventually be yours as well. Sorry.

To help you in the process, be wise (by not spending on temporary things like deodorants and soaps) and be positive (by thinking that the opposite is always true and practical – foul body odor is good, got it?).

Our Indian movies with all our funny dances and songs (sang by a choking lady) will keep on flooding the media until you will dance like us and sing like us! And of course, smell like us too.

Theologically speaking, we are all made from dust and dust we shall return. Unless we have a perfect body, our body will remain the same – dust. It will always smell like earth. For those who think they smell good by using deodorants and soaps, try not taking a bath for some time and you will smell like us. All of us are the same – we smell the same. Why not live naturally – smell naturally.

    Peace!

This is the most idiotic explanation I have heard so far! I am not a racist, but I have been disturbed by the B.O. of Indian people in the past and quiet often to be honest. I work in IT and as everyone know, there is a lot of Indians in the field. Not sure what it is, bu I have heard excuse as to why Indians smell from Pheromones to the food they eat. Now be that whatever it maybe, the fact is THEY SMELL FUNKY!

Now for you to say that we “have to like the natural odor” of people?! BULLCRAP! If you are offended by what people say about Indians, do something about it. Do you think I have to be in the same room with a bunch of people that Stink to high Heaven (be where ever they might be from)?! What about my rights?

Trust me buddy, I am not the only one that thinks this way. Indians do smell differently. The majority of people can’t be wrong when it comes to that.

As far of your Music, it’s a choice of taste. I wouldn’t be caught dead listening to it.

On the other hand I have to admit that Indians are very smart, and unfortunately most have to leave their country to amount to a better life. But that’s the same with many cultures around the world.

People we are not asking you to abandon your culture, but be aware to other people’s point of view if you do choose to come to work or play and you have B.O or smell like whatever you just ate. It DEFINETELY is not our fault we think Indians STINK!

      Dear Avyan,

I smell like Asin, OK? I dont care what others say – that I have a stinking smell. As long as 1 billion Indians smell like me, I dont care!!!

All of us who have this distinct natural Indian smell should be proud that we are a distinct human race. We should love our own – right? Love our smell and even tell the world that our smell is good. When they start proving our stink, just deny it (as we always do when confronted). If they insist that we have body odor, just say – such body odor is for the wise and sexy only. I have tried using soap and deodorant, it works for a few hours, but afterwards, my natural smell comes back. So I have decided not to use soap and deodorant anymore. I just want to smell natural as 1 billion Indians smell natural.

Smile – the world will soon smell like us!!!

Not even the richest person on earth or the Queen of England would be able to say that all parts of her body never stink.

You see, its a matter to spending money to temporarily cover-up your stink or to save money and live-up the truth.

I can forgive the labourers because they have limited capacity in several aspects to combat the odor, such as financially, literacy, or time.

But the professional ones, they should have known better.

I know that they bathe, like, twice a day, one before going to work, and one before going to bed. But I have discovered the following practices that may be causing their offensive smell

    1. They do not use soap
    2. They do not use shampoo
    3. They do not use detergent in doing laundry
    4. They use the clothes again, the one that they used the previous day and laundered without detergent
    5. They always use some smelly coconut oil all over their body

But i can’t say it’s because of 6 and 7. From my experience, maybe it’s all got to do with hygiene. I have Indian friends and some smell and some don’t. Some have active sweat glands while others don’t. Those with active sweat glands should just shower more and use more deodorant or something. And another thing is, not all Indians do that from 1-8 .

I don’t think it is racist to say many Indians smell bad. I’ve worked with many of them over the years. I would say, 90% or more have personal hygiene issues when compared to Western culture. My office once hired this young Indian fellow. His clothes, his appearance appeated very clean. However, by mid-day, his armpits were flying high with bad odor. Everyone was complaining. I ended up speaking to him and he told me that it is against his religion to use underarm deodorant. I couldn’t accept this. I know there is nothing in any religion book about condemning the use of Right Guard. Since he refused to do anything, he ended up being fired by our Director.

I have not had the pleasure of being around many cultures or ethnicities other than my own but I have noticed the smell of Indians as noted by the rest of you. I wonder if it is just that I have a limited amount of experience and all different ethnicities have a distinctive odor or if it is just Indians. I suspect the Indians do not even realize their malodor. Is education the answer or is the problem more of an economic one? Or, is the problem mine and I must simply learn to live with it like when women claim that most of them can do all the same things most men can but that they are different but the same?

I think this is definitely racist even though it doesn’t seem obvious. The white people don’t even brush their teeth or wash everyday whereas indians do it everyday. Also indians smell nice as the whites love the taste and smell of the curry in the Indian restaurants but do not like the smell of the indians who make the curry. So we need to wash everyday like the Indians and stop being racist.

Whites, Blacks, Latinos, Asians each and every one of them get sweaty and they stink. The only thing I got to tell the people who think they “DO NOT STINK” is that, I guess you cannot smell your own stink. So it is not just Indian people who stink my friends every one else stinks as well in the same circumstances.

My business is really down. I started a business selling soaps and deodorants to my people; I have tried using all the gimmicks just to get my people’s attention – nothing, nothing is coming!!!

Then I realized that Soaps and Deodorants are created by people who want to make money all the time. These Capitalists created a need (i.e., need to smell like soap and deodorant) by branding body odor as unnatural. And then, everybody followed like blind rats, being convinced that natural body odor is a stink that must be cured with soaps and deodorants. Yet, this is an endless process done every day because the effect of soaps and deodorants last only for 8-12 hours. After that, natural odors (stink) comes back (even the Queen of England is not exempted here!).

Now, I have realized that natural odor is what every human has – body odor is for all kinds of human beings and smelling otherwise is dependent on the amount of soap and deodorant you use, how often you use them, and how good you are to try to hide your own stink.

I challenge those who say we stink, if you take away soaps and deodorant, will you still smell “good”?

My business is down because my people are wise enough to accept the natural, breathe the natural and are natural all the time. You can replace the word “natural” and “stink” and we won’t mind because everybody stinks in this whole wide world. Tike?

This stereotype is as ridiculous as the one which says that all Non Asians are promiscuous b******s and b*****s who engage in sexually deviant behaviour for sport and don’t give a s**t about their families. All individuals have equal potential for smelling or not smelling depending on their standards of hygiene and other factors like stress may also cause BO in otherwise hygienic individuals. Instead of tarring such people with the brush of criminality or mental illness and punishing them with the emotionally painful consequence of social exclusion, build trust with them and help them overcome their problem. Don’t add to their stress and compound their already embarrassing problem. Body odor does not define a person. A person with BO may not smell like the first rose of summer but there’s a really good chance that he’s really funny, kind and smart and he can showcase these qualities with a little help from non-judgmental friends. A problem usually never decides the worth of a person, with a little broadmindedness and common sense, society can go a long way. Rejecting a person for a small reason like this one is boneheaded and idiotic.

For all the haters out there who brought up the point about the North India South India BO divide you guys are pathetic losers who don’t even deserve to own computers.

Its really the food. Not the ingredients, but their food. I tried to do a test, at which i ate indian food for a week, just indian food and nothing else. Breakfast , lunch and dinner. Before i could reach the 4th day, while jogging, i smelled that distinctive indian smell around me . I was all alone, and then i realised it was very strong coming from my sweat . Especially the underarms. Then i stopped eating their food. And true enough, the smell dissapeared.

My north indian girlfriend, has this problem and it affects her modelling a lot. So now she avoided those foods and damn she smells And feels great.

As the saying goes ‘you are what you eat’

Indians do not ‘stink’, or ‘smell bad’. They just have their own unique aroma, and they shouldn’t be judged for it. I, for instance, am almost completely Indian, and have been told that I smell like cinnamon and roses. Don’t criticize someone until you have walked a mile in his moccasins.

Note: I did not write the original question, nor did I write anything other comments than this one.

Here on one side, this article accuses persons of being racist or prejudice against Indians, but then later goes on to acknowledge that different cultures have different sets of sweat glands. You’ve inherently admitted in finding that this ‘myth’ now exhibits ‘merit?’

So here’s the question: If it’s true, then why is it racist? It’s not like I avoid contact with Indian people that might smell, so tell me, why if I can smell Indian folk and you hold that they have different sweat glands do you call me a racist? You effectively argue that persons experienced to certain stimuli have no right whatsoever to discuss it. In fact, it is evident that you are the only one who is racist here buddy by discussing biology, yet telling the people that we have no right to engage in the discussion of biology.

My stand on this is purely from a biological point of view.

As far as the argument that certain folk may smell worse to other cultures, well since I have neither discovered, nor heard of that from any other culture; your now claim which I view as ‘prejudice’ is dismissed as it relies on unproven assumptions and in my view, the original argument remains.

If a rotting banana smells funky then I suppose that’s being a racist too, only STUPID STINK people in denial would agree. NO ONE likes that stinky curry stink ODOR – It’s no wonder that guy got fired if you think it’s ok to bother people with your nasty body odor it’s NOT. Not only do they stink but I have noticed they are also extremely RUDE with very bad manners – BYE!
