Why do muffins sink in the middle?
Muffins are of the American origin. They are typically termed as such to refer to cakes which are made into small portions. Muffins may resemble cupcakes and small cakes but it is distinct from the two because muffins are made less sweet and lack the element of having a frosting or an icing on top. The typical sixe of a muffin is commonly measured using the palm of the hand. They generally fit in the palm of an adult hand, and are intended to be consumed by an individual in a single sitting. Commonly found in the 19th century American cookbooks, muffins can be of an English kind or a corn type. With its many varieties that come with specific ingredients such as blueberries, chocolate chips, cucumbers, raspberry, cinnamon, pumpkin, date, nut, lemon, banana, orange, peach, strawberry, boysenberry, almond, and carrot, muffins are often consumed during breakfast. However some offer it during mid-day, preferably with tea.
In baking muffins, there have been problems that most bakers complain about. It has always been a predicament that muffins sink in the middle. Culinary experts claimed that the reason why muffins sink in the middle is because several different factors. One reason could be that the temperature of the oven is too low. Without enough heat, muffins tend to sink, particularly in the middle, because the ingredients have not obtained its desired consistency. Another reason could be that the batter was mixed excessively. Over mixture can alter the consistency of the batter, thereby causing the middle to sink. It could also be that there is not enough liquid or there was too little baking powder being added in the mixture.
These errors can be alleviated when proper instructions are followed and practice is performed towards perfection.
