Why is Remy Ma in jail?

State Supreme Court Justice Rena Uviller described Remy Ma as a young woman whose anger is out of control” and who does not take responsibility for her actions”. This was declared by Uviller during the arraignment of the alleged multi-awarded American rapper after she had been accused of shooting her friend outside a nightclub in Manhattan.

Remy Ma, whose birth name is Reminisce Smith, was given a sentence of eight years in jail after shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph which happened July 2007. According to police report, Remy was with a group of people, including Makeda, chilling out at the Pizza Bar located in Lower Manhattan. The argument between Makeda and Remy happened a block away from the club at about 4 a.m. when Ma accused Barnes-Joseph of stealing from her an amount of $2,000. The dispute between the two became violent and Makeda ended up with a gunshot wound on her torso. However, the victim was able to positively identify to the police that her shooter was Remy.

Remy Ma was facing a sentence of 25 years in prison for assault, illegal possession of firearm, and attempted murder when she faced Manhattan Supreme Court. However, Ma pleaded judge Uviller for mercy to lower her sentence for the sake of her young son. Ma was taken into prison at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Bedford Hills, New York located at Westchester County. Ma was expected to be released earlier in 2013, and she was able to marry her fiancé Papoose, a fellow rapper, while she was in prison last May 2008.
