Why is Biomass important?
Biomass is a term that highly refers to materials, particularly living materials, which are converted to a usable form of energy. The type of materials that are most likely being used to produce such type of energy are wood, waste and alcohol fuels. Biomass is commonly planted and grown to produce heat and energy and provide electricity. In this context, biomass is otherwise known as a living biomass, where plants are grown to continually generate heat and provide energy. Biomass is basically composed of gases of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Although minute quantities of other elements can also be found, the three previously mentioned gases are the primary bases that comprise biomass. Biomass is most frequently produced from five identified sources. These are garbage, wood, waste, landfill gases and fuels based on alcohol. Under specific chemical and mechanical processes, these sources are converted to biomass and can be further converted to other forms of energy, which are adequately utilized and consumed for man’s beneficial needs.
Therefore, biomass is one important form of energy source that is found to be useful and beneficial for human kind. As a renewable source of energy, biomass can be converted to thermal, chemical and biochemical forms that are deemed to meaningfully aid in production and generation of usable materials and options. One more important fact about biomass is that it utilizes waste materials without compromising the status of nature and the environment. It even contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which are found to damaging the ozone layer. Another importance of biomass is that it helps in decreasing the demand of oil and fuel from foreign countries thereby, reducing foreign dependence of the country.
